Oh wow!
I was reading Shay Sorrells blog the other day, and what she said had totally hit me right in the head.
She basically said I can go ahead and eat a 250calorie piece of Brownie, and still be hungry because the Brownie had no nutritional value. Or I can take a cup of Greek non fat yogurt, add some cocoa, a natural sweetener, and some fruit sprinkled on top for 200calories, filled with protein, fiber and vitamins, and not be hungry.
It made me think, is what I'm eating empty calories(Empty Calories are processed foods, fried foods, basically junk food(i.e.chips, soda pop, popsicles, etc...).), or vitamin, protein, and fiber calories?
If not, how can I change that?
Well one of things that I've learned from Rachael Ray, Jillian Michaels, and Trainer Momma. Is we either change the ingredients we use to make our treats/meals or find a healthy alternative.
If I want Ice Cream, I get Frozen Yogurt with fruit sprinkled on top instead. Or just finding low calorie healthy desserts to satisfy my sweet tooth, raspberries, with melted Dark Chocolate drizzled on top 150 calories.
Get creative, and use fruits as desserts , 2 cups of Strawberries sprinkled Stevia, less than 150 calories.
Empty calories are everywhere, and it's our job to find the foods that are actually good for our bodies. I go out of my way to find fruit and vegetables to add to every meal. I think logically about every food choice I make, especially since I'm counting calories, I see everything as numbers too. Now I look for nutritional value along with numbers of calories that are in it.
Things to look for in your foods known as good quality calories:
Vitamins
Whole Wheat/ Whole grain (Complex Carbs)
5 servings of vegetables a day
5 servings of fruit a day
25grams of Fiber or more a day
Water
Protein
When I eat good quality calories I'm not hungry, I'm energetic, and focused. Big difference than if I ate fried foods, and lot of sugary things, I would be tired and grumpy.
Basically what I'm saying is when you look at your food, think, will it satisfy my body's needs or is it empty calories?
Or maybe ask this yourself this question when you're looking at food. Will it make me happy, energetic, and healthy? Or will it make me tired, grumpy and fat?
